Data Scientist at Football Australia
Job Description
Football Australia are recruiting a Data Scientist to join their Football Intelligence team, turning complex football data into clear, actionable insights across the Football Department.
The role will work across National Teams, Talent Identification, player monitoring, Coach Education and technical development, combining advanced data science with an applied understanding of football performance.
The Data Scientist will develop analytical models, tools and insights using multiple sources of football data, including:
Event Data | Tracking Data | Physical Performance | Scouting Data | Player Monitoring
Working alongside coaches, analysts, technical staff and performance practitioners, the successful candidate will help translate complex datasets into practical information that can influence selection, player development and performance decision-making.
- Develop data models, performance metrics and actionable football insights.
- Integrate event, tracking, physical performance, scouting and player-monitoring data.
- Support National Teams through evidence-based analysis and reporting.
- Develop analytical solutions for Talent Identification and player monitoring.
- Build and maintain databases, dashboards and reporting tools.
- Translate technical, tactical and physical data into accessible insights for coaches and practitioners.
- Lead the integration and analysis of scouting and player-performance data.
- Support player selection, development pathways and performance benchmarking.
- Produce standardised reporting for opposition analysis, match reviews and tournaments.
- Contribute to football research and technical-development projects.
- Support Coach Education through analysis, presentations and learning resources.
- Work across the Football Department to improve data management, architecture, reporting and analytical practice.
Candidates should demonstrate:
- Experience within football or high-performance sport.
- Experience conducting pre- and post-match analysis and reporting.
- Strong understanding of football datasets and platforms, including event, tracking and scouting data.
- Advanced programming skills in Python and/or R.
- Experience in statistical analysis, data modelling and visualisation.
- Ability to translate complex analysis into meaningful information for coaches, players and technical staff.
- Strong communication, collaboration and stakeholder-management skills.
- Ability to operate effectively within an elite sporting environment.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and under pressure.
Experience across the following areas will be particularly relevant:
Python | R | SQL | APIs | Power BI | Tableau | AWS | Snowflake | Databricks | Automated Data Pipelines | Cloud Infrastructure | Git | CI/CD
Complementary experience in data quality, governance, application deployment and automated reporting workflows is also desirable.
