Job Description

About PHASIS

PHASIS is an evidence-led health and human performance company developing transparent, science-driven products built around evidence, effective formulation, quality, and real-world usability.

We are seeking an experienced

Food Scientist / Sports Nutrition Formulator

to assist with the development of a new powdered functional nutrition product.

PHASIS has already completed the initial product concept, nutritional strategy, target consumer definition, and supporting research. We are seeking a specialist primarily for

technical formulation, bench prototyping, sensory optimization, stability planning, and commercialization readiness.

Detailed product specifications and formulation targets will only be provided to shortlisted candidates following execution of an NDA.

The Project

The project involves development of a

high-protein powdered functional beverage

with additional nutritional components.

A primary development objective is achieving a

light, refreshing drinking experience

rather than the characteristics of a traditional creamy protein shake.

The final product must balance:

  • Nutritional efficacy
  • Ingredient quality
  • Excellent taste and drinkability
  • GI tolerance
  • Solubility and dispersion
  • Commercial scalability
  • Shelf stability
  • Cost efficiency

The product is intended for commercial production and sale in the United States.

Scope of Work

The selected formulator will be expected to:

  • Evaluate technical feasibility of PHASIS's existing product concept
  • Recommend appropriate ingredient technologies and forms
  • Develop the complete quantitative formulation
  • Physically produce bench prototypes
  • Optimize flavor, acidity, sweetness, mouthfeel, and aftertaste
  • Address foaming, solubility, dispersion, sedimentation, and other relevant technical challenges
  • Optimize the product for its intended use conditions
  • Establish appropriate raw-material specifications
  • Recommend commercially available ingredients and suppliers
  • Ensure selected raw materials can be sourced for U.S. commercial production
  • Consider commercial COGS during development
  • Develop two finalized flavor systems
  • Formulate with commercial shelf life and stability in mind
  • Provide manufacturing-ready formulation documentation
  • Support initial technical transfer to PHASIS's selected U.S. contract manufacturer

Prototype Development

Physical bench prototypes are required.

The project should include:

Initial development round

— Bench prototypes and technical variations as appropriate.

Optimization

— Up to two agreed rounds of formulation and sensory refinement based on PHASIS feedback.

Final prototypes

— Finalized samples representing the proposed commercial formulations.

Final prototypes must be shipped to PHASIS in the United States for evaluation.

Delivery of a theoretical formula without physical prototype development will

not

satisfy the project requirements.

Quality & Testing

The final formulation must be suitable for commercial production and capable of meeting agreed quality and safety specifications.

Final prototype and/or pilot samples will undergo independent third-party laboratory testing, including:

  • Full microbiological panel
  • Heavy-metals panel, including lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury
  • Relevant nutritional, identity, or potency verification where appropriate

PHASIS will coordinate and pay approved third-party laboratory fees separately.

The selected formulator will be expected to review relevant laboratory results and address reasonable formulation-related issues if the product fails agreed specifications.

Shelf Life & Stability

Shelf-life considerations must be incorporated into formulation development.

The selected formulator will be expected to:

  • Recommend an appropriate commercial shelf-life target
  • Identify major formulation-related stability risks
  • Recommend appropriate storage conditions
  • Establish a recommended stability-testing protocol
  • Consider moisture, organoleptic, ingredient, and other relevant stability factors
  • Address reasonable formulation-related stability issues identified during development

PHASIS understands that real-time shelf-life validation may extend beyond the initial development engagement. The objective of this project is to develop an appropriately stable commercial formulation and establish the protocol required for continued validation.

Ideal Candidate

We are particularly interested in candidates with hands-on commercial experience involving:

  • Clear or juice-style protein beverages
  • Whey and other complete-protein systems
  • Sports-nutrition powders
  • Functional powdered beverages
  • Hydration/electrolyte products
  • Flavor development and masking
  • Powder stability
  • Commercial powder manufacturing and scale-up

Strong preference will be given to candidates who have personally taken products through:

Bench formulation → Prototype → Testing → Pilot → Commercial manufacturing

Relevant education in Food Science, Chemistry, Nutrition Science, Formulation Science, or a related field

is preferred.

Applicants whose experience is primarily limited to capsules and tablets are unlikely to be a fit for this project.

International Applicants

International applicants are welcome.

Candidates located outside the United States must be able to:

  • Personally produce physical bench prototypes
  • Ship prototypes to the United States
  • Develop using raw materials that are commercially available for U.S. production
  • Provide appropriate raw-material specifications and identifying information
  • Design the formulation for eventual production by a U.S. contract manufacturer
  • Transfer the completed formulation and documentation to PHASIS's selected manufacturer

Previous experience developing products for the

U.S. food, dietary-supplement, functional-beverage, or sports-nutrition market

is strongly preferred.

Expected Deliverables

The completed engagement should include:

1. Technical feasibility assessment

2. Final quantitative formulation

3. Ingredient and raw-material specifications

4. Physical bench prototypes

5. Up to two agreed revision rounds

6. Two finalized flavor systems

7. Final approved prototypes

8. Ingredient/supplier recommendations

9. Shelf-life and stability recommendations

10. Recommended stability-testing protocol

11. Review of relevant laboratory results

12. Manufacturing-ready technical documentation

13. Initial technical-transfer support for PHASIS's selected manufacturer

PHASIS Will Handle

PHASIS will separately manage:

  • Product and brand strategy
  • Packaging design
  • Packaging procurement
  • Label development
  • Packaging/label compliance
  • Regulatory and claims review
  • Approved third-party laboratory costs
  • Final manufacturer selection
  • Commercial production arrangements

The formulator's role is primarily focused on

developing an exceptional, technically sound, commercially manufacturable product.

Budget

Fixed project budget: up to $2,500 USD.

Raw materials, prototype shipping, and approved third-party laboratory expenses may be quoted separately.

All additional expenses must receive PHASIS approval before being incurred.

Applicants should clearly state what is included in their proposed project fee.

Confidentiality & Intellectual Property

Detailed product specifications, formulation targets, intended use case, and proprietary product strategy will only be disclosed to shortlisted candidates following execution of an NDA.

The selected candidate will also be required to enter into an appropriate development agreement addressing confidentiality, intellectual property, and ownership of project work product.

The final formulation must be owned by PHASIS and transferable to a commercial manufacturer selected by PHASIS

, subject to expressly disclosed pre-existing intellectual property and third-party proprietary technologies.

Any ingredient, flavor system, supplier relationship, technology, or other component that could restrict PHASIS's ability to transfer or commercially manufacture the finished formulation must be disclosed before engagement.

To Apply

Please provide:

  • Relevant education and qualifications
  • Years of commercial formulation experience
  • Examples or categories of products you have personally developed
  • Specific experience with clear or juice-style high-protein beverages
  • Experience developing powdered functional beverages
  • Experience with flavor development and masking
  • Experience with product stability and shelf-life planning
  • Experience with microbiological and heavy-metal testing requirements
  • Examples of products taken through commercial manufacturing
