About the job

Company Description

Wisely Optimize is a basketball analytics company with college clients across the country — and growing fast. We turn complex data into simple, actionable workflows for coaches and decision-makers, especially around roster construction and the transfer portal window. We're in a real growth moment: our client base is expanding, our user base keeps climbing, and inbound interest is building week over week. You'd be coming on as the momentum picks up. Learn more at wiselyoptimize.com.

You'd be learning alongside Co-Founder & CEO Alex Beene, who has worked with 5 pro basketball teams across coaching and front office. This is a for-credit internship for a student who wants real exposure to both the business and the science of a growing sports analytics company — and to build a portfolio towards a Sports Operations career.

Role Description

This internship is built to give you a genuine feel for how a sports analytics startup actually runs — not fetching coffee, but real work on both sides of the company. Your time splits three ways:

40% Analytics.

This will include a mix of analytics, predictive modeling, and ad-hoc projects for our Dynasty customers. You'll work directly with data (SQL and Python), turning questions into analysis a client can actually use.

40% Marketing.

Help drive the growth engine: content creation, learning how to produce and edit marketing videos, and supporting sales prep and outreach. You'll wear a few hats here and get hands-on with how a startup actually tells its story and wins clients.

20% Dream Time.

This is something we practice at Wisely. You spend 80% of your time on what the company needs (Analytics & Marketing) and 20% on whatever

*you*

think matters most — a project you believe in, a skill you want to develop, an idea you want to chase. You dream, and we back it. It's yours to run with.

This is a remote, async, outcome-driven internship designed to fit around your coursework, so you can do real work without it swallowing your semester. Outcomes matter more than hours, though we do keep an afternoon daily standup rhythm that you are invited to and expect clear communication about progress and blockers.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled and able to receive academic credit for the internship.
  • Comfortable with SQL, or eager to get comfortable fast; any exposure to Python, data tools, or content creation is a plus.
  • Genuinely curious about both sides — you want to understand the business

*and*

the numbers, not just one.

  • Self-starter: you communicate clearly, ask good questions, and follow through without hand-holding.
  • Real interest in basketball, and a desire to grow toward Basketball Operations long-term.
  • Nice to have: coursework or projects in data science, statistics, analytics, or marketing; hands-on experience with SQL, Python, or video/content tools; independent basketball analytics work (class, public, or personal); experience in fast-moving, small-team environments.

How to apply

Apply on LinkedIn, then email alex@wiselyoptimize.com with:

  • Your background and what you're studying (1–2 paragraphs)
  • Confirmation that you can receive academic credit, and any requirements your program has
  • Links or projects that show your work (GitHub, analytics, content, coursework — anything relevant)
  • Your answer to this, in your own words:

Pick one basketball stat you think is misunderstood or underrated. Explain what it really tells us, where it falls short, and how you'd get a coach to actually care about it.

*An answer to the last question is required; applications without one won't be considered.*
