Afl Football Analysis Internship at Essendon Football Club
Job Description
Essendon Football Club are offering university students the opportunity to join their AFL Football Analytics team for the 2027 campaign, gaining hands-on experience within a professional Australian Rules Football environment.
The internship is designed to develop the core practical skills required within football performance analysis and analytics, combining video capture and coding with an introduction to data processing and applied football data.
The placement is based entirely onsite at The Hangar, Melbourne Airport, and runs from November 2026 through to September 2027.
- Capture and stack training footage.
- Code training and match footage using Hudl Sportscode.
- Gain an introduction to data processing and analysis using R Studio.
- Work with first- and third-party football data sources.
- Contribute to applied football analysis projects.
- Potentially assist with VFL game-day analysis, subject to availability.
The internship tasks are also aligned with the Exercise Science Standards component of the ESSA Exercise Science Practicum requirements.
Applicants must:
- Be in their second year of university or later.
- Be currently studying Exercise Science, Sports Science, Performance Analysis, Data Analysis or a related degree.
- Have a placement requirement as part of their university course.
- Be able to complete approximately 120–200 placement hours.
- Be available to work onsite in Melbourne.
- Successfully complete a police check.
- Hold a current Working with Children Check.
A particularly strong placement for students wanting to develop across both sides of contemporary performance analysis:
Video Capture → Sportscode → Data Processing → R Studio → Applied Football Analysis
Rather than being restricted to video coding alone, the internship provides exposure to data analysis and football analytics projects, alongside the potential for VFL matchday experience.
